What a Text actually stores

A plain text file records characters and nothing else — no headings, no emphasis, no structure of any kind. That makes this the one conversion on the site where the honest answer is often "there is nothing to convert", and the tool says exactly that rather than handing your file back and letting you wonder whether it worked.

Two reasons, and neither is really the conversion. Log files and exported notes are the things people most often paste into a model without any idea how large they are, and this is where you find out before you are billed for it. And a .md file you already have still needs checking against a context window.

What survives the conversion

Everything, because nothing is thrown away. Paragraph breaks are preserved, and anything that is already valid Markdown — a file you wrote as .md, or notes with dashes and hashes — passes through untouched. The real work here is the panel underneath: the token count, the cost across every model in the price table, and whether the result fits the context window you are aiming at.

What does not

Structure cannot be invented. A text file where headings are marked by underlines of equals signs, or by ALL CAPS, or by nothing at all, stays flat, because guessing which lines were meant as headings would be wrong often enough to be worse than leaving it alone. If your text has real structure, it almost certainly started life in another format — convert that instead.

Saying so plainly is deliberate. A converter that quietly drops half a document is worse than one that tells you which half, because you can work around a limit you know about.

Questions

Why did my text file come back unchanged?

Because it was already valid Markdown — no HTML, no structure to translate. That is a correct result rather than a failure, and the tool says so on screen. The token count underneath is the part that is doing the work.

Can it turn plain text into headings and lists?

No, and deliberately so. Inferring that a capitalised line was meant as a heading is a guess, and a converter that guesses wrong silently is worse than one that leaves your text alone.

Does it handle log files?

Yes. Logs are the most common thing pasted into a model blind, and the useful output here is the size: a log that looks short in an editor is frequently tens of thousands of tokens and will not fit where you meant to put it.
