What a ODT actually stores

ODT is the OpenDocument format that LibreOffice, OpenOffice and Google Docs exports use. Like a Word file it is a zip archive of XML, and like a Word file it records what things are rather than how they look — which makes it one of the highest-fidelity conversions here.

Anyone working outside Microsoft Office ends up with ODT files, and almost no online converter handles them — the format is common enough to matter and niche enough to be ignored. Because the outline levels are explicit, the result is a document a model can navigate rather than a wall of text.

What survives the conversion

Headings keep their exact level, because ODT stores an explicit outline level on every heading rather than leaving it to be inferred from size. Ordered and unordered lists survive with their nesting, as do tables, bold, italic and links. In practice an ODT round-trips about as cleanly as a .docx.

What does not

Images are dropped, since Markdown cannot embed them and they are not text a model can read. Footnotes, tracked changes and comments are left out — they belong to a different layer of the document, and folding them into the body makes it read as though it contradicts itself. Complex multi-column page layouts flatten to a single flow.

Saying so plainly is deliberate. A converter that quietly drops half a document is worse than one that tells you which half, because you can work around a limit you know about.

Questions

Is ODT as good as DOCX for this?

Yes, and for the same reason: both record structure explicitly, so headings, lists and tables survive rather than being guessed at from appearance.

Will a Google Docs export work?

Yes. Google Docs offers OpenDocument as a download format, and those files convert exactly like a LibreOffice one.

What happens to tracked changes?

They are left out and only the current text is converted. A document that showed every insertion and deletion inline would read as self-contradictory to a model.
