What a SRT actually stores

This is the conversion that changes a file from unusable to useful, rather than merely reformatting it. A subtitle file is roughly half timestamps and cue numbers, and its text is chopped into two-second fragments that break mid-sentence.

It is the shortest path from a recorded meeting, lecture or video to a summary. Almost nobody offers it, and "summarise this call" is one of the highest-value things anyone does with a model.

What survives the conversion

Every spoken word, rejoined into flowing prose and split at sentence boundaries rather than at cue boundaries. Inline formatting tags are removed.

What does not

Timing information is discarded, deliberately — it is most of the file and pure cost once you are reading the words rather than displaying them. Speaker labels survive only if they were written into the subtitle text; subtitle formats do not record who is speaking.

Saying so plainly is deliberate. A converter that quietly drops half a document is worse than one that tells you which half, because you can work around a limit you know about.

Questions

Why remove the timestamps?

Because they are half the file and carry no meaning once the words are the point. Leaving them in would roughly double the token cost of the same content.

Does it work with WebVTT?

Yes, .vtt as well as .srt, including the header and note blocks WebVTT allows.

Will I get speaker names?

Only if they were typed into the subtitle text. Neither format has a field for who is speaking, so there is nothing to recover when they are absent.
