What a EPUB actually stores
An EPUB is a zip of XHTML — a small website in a box — which makes it one of the more faithful conversions here, since the structure is already semantic.
Usually to pull a few chapters into a model for summarising or questioning, which works well. Feeding an entire book does not, and the token panel will tell you so immediately. The practical workflow is to convert, look at the token count, and take the chapters you actually need - a typical novel runs to several hundred thousand tokens, which is past every context window on the market, while three chapters comfortably fits anywhere. EPUB is also the format most public-domain books arrive in, so it is often the quickest route from a Gutenberg download to a model that can answer questions about the text.
What survives the conversion
Chapters in reading order, separated by horizontal rules, with their headings, paragraphs, lists and emphasis intact.
What does not
Cover art and illustrations are dropped. DRM-protected files cannot be opened at all — that is the point of DRM. Conversion is capped at sixty chapters, though the real limit arrives sooner: a whole book will not fit in any model context window.
Saying so plainly is deliberate. A converter that quietly drops half a document is worse than one that tells you which half, because you can work around a limit you know about.
Questions
Can I convert a whole book?
Technically yes, up to sixty chapters — but no model has a context window large enough to take one, so the useful workflow is a few chapters at a time.
Does it work with DRM-protected ebooks?
No. DRM encrypts the content, and nothing here attempts to circumvent that.
What about MOBI or AZW?
Not supported. Convert to EPUB first with a tool like Calibre.
