What a EML actually stores

Email is the format people most often want summarised and least often want uploaded, which is exactly why this runs in your browser. A .eml is the raw message as your mail server stored it, encodings and all.

Summarising a thread, drafting a reply, or extracting what was actually agreed — all common, all much better with the headers and the quoting intact.

What survives the conversion

The headers worth having — from, to, cc, date and subject — as a block at the top. The body, with quoted-printable and base64 decoded, and HTML mail converted rather than dumped as markup.

What does not

Attachments are not extracted. Inline images are lost. Long quoted reply chains are kept but counted, so you are told how much of what you are about to send is history rather than new.

Saying so plainly is deliberate. A converter that quietly drops half a document is worse than one that tells you which half, because you can work around a limit you know about.

Questions

How do I get a .eml file?

Most clients let you drag a message to your desktop, or use File then Save As. Outlook produces .msg by default, which is a different format — forward the message to yourself and save from a webmail client if you need .eml.

Is my email uploaded?

No. It is parsed in your browser and never sent anywhere, which for private correspondence is the only acceptable answer.

What happens to the quoted history?

It is kept, and the number of quoted lines is reported so you can decide whether to trim it before sending.
