What is MCP?
Metacognitive Prompting makes a model do what a careful reviewer does: form a first impression, then attack it, then settle on a considered position and say how sure it is. Five stages, and the third one is the reason the other four are worth running.
A model asked for an assessment produces its first impression in polished, finished prose. There is no draft, no second thought, no visible moment where it considered the opposite — and because the output is fluent, a first impression is indistinguishable from a conclusion. MCP inserts the second thought as a required stage. Stage two commits to a preliminary read; stage three has to argue against it and name which of its own assumptions were doing the most work. That structure is what makes an assessment feel earned rather than produced — and stage five, the confidence judgement, is the part almost no other technique has at all.
Where MCP Came From
Wang and Zhao, NAACL 2024
"Metacognitive Prompting Improves Understanding in Large Language Models" (Yuqing Wang and Yun Zhao, NAACL 2024). The technique is modelled on human introspective reasoning and runs in five stages: understand the input, form a preliminary judgement, critically evaluate that preliminary analysis, reach a final decision with its reasoning, and finally assess confidence in the whole process. It was tested across Llama2, PaLM2, GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 on ten NLU datasets drawn from GLUE, SuperGLUE, BLUE and LexGLUE, and compared against chain of thought and its variants.
Why it is not just chain of thought with more steps
The difference is what the stages are about. Chain of thought decomposes the problem: step one, step two, step three, answer. MCP decomposes the reviewer: here is what I think, here is why I might be wrong, here is what I think now, here is how sure I am. One is a procedure applied to the task; the other is a procedure applied to the model's own output.
Beware the acronym — MCP means something else entirely now
A practical warning. MCP is overwhelmingly used today for the Model Context Protocol, the standard for connecting AI applications to tools and data sources. Searching the three letters in an AI context will return that and almost nothing else. The two have no relationship — search "metacognitive prompting" in full.
The 5 Slots, One at a Time
Each slot is a decision. Leave it out and the model still makes it — just without you.
The second half is where the value is. Anyone can restate a proposal; the useful move is naming the assumptions it rests on that nobody wrote down. In a business case those unstated assumptions are almost always where the flaw lives, and surfacing them here means stage three has something to attack.
It has to be short and it has to be a real position. A hedged preliminary judgement gives stage three nothing to push against, and the whole method collapses into a single balanced assessment with four headings. Force a verdict here, however provisional.
The method. Give it the most space and say so. Two questions do the work: what would a sceptic say, and which of your own stage-two assumptions were load-bearing? The second is the harder and better one, because it turns a generic devil's advocate exercise into a specific audit of the reasoning just performed.
Require it to say explicitly what survived the critique and what did not. An assessment that arrives at stage four agreeing entirely with stage two has usually skipped the work — that is not impossible, but it should be remarked on rather than passed over silently.
The distinguishing stage, and it needs one caveat stated in the prompt: a model's confidence is not calibrated. Treat it as a relative signal, not a probability. The genuinely valuable half is the second clause — what would most change this — because that is an action item rather than a feeling.

Confidence - how confident you are in stage 4 and why, plus the single piece of information that would most change it. Stage 3 is the point of the exercise; give it the most space. A review that reaches stage 4 agreeing entirely with stage 2 has usually skipped the work. Write 800 to 1,000 words for the owner, who is not financially trained and is emotionally invested in this idea. For example, stage 5 should read like this: ``` Confidence: moderate. Ninety-two. The line that changes the output most is the requirement that every flaw name the figure it attacks — without it, stage three produces eloquent scepticism that touches none of the numbers in the case.
Ninety-two, and a review that skipped the thinking would score the same
One check is unreachable, and both of the ways this technique fails quietly are unmeasured:
No persona slot. Eight points are available and an expert persona is a poor fit here — it raises the confidence of the delivery without improving the critique, which is the wrong direction for a method built on doubting itself.
The entire method, and invisible. A stage three that lists two mild counterpoints and then agrees with stage two scores exactly as well as one that overturns the preliminary read. The tell is not in the score: compare stage two and stage four, and if nothing moved, ask why.
Model-stated confidence is not calibrated against outcomes. It ranks usefully within one answer and it is not a probability, and no rubric distinguishes a considered "moderate" from a reflexive one.
So the check to run yourself takes ten seconds: read stage two and stage four side by side. If the final assessment is the first impression in better clothes, the critique stage was decorative — and the fix is to make stage two commit harder, because a hedged first read is impossible to argue with.

MCP vs the Alternatives
The closest relative and a real distinction. CoT decomposes the problem; MCP decomposes the reviewer. Use CoT to work something out, MCP to check whether the working can be trusted.
The natural pairing. GKP surfaces the premises before the answer; MCP critiques the answer once it exists. Together you get stated premises and an audit of what was built on them.
Both add deliberation, in different directions. ToT explores alternative paths; MCP interrogates the one path already taken.
The human-planning equivalent of stage five. SCOPE commits to what would falsify a conclusion before the work starts; MCP asks after.

Five Ways People Get MCP Wrong
The defining MCP failure, and it disables everything downstream. "There are several factors to consider" cannot be argued against, so stage three has nothing to do. Force a real verdict at stage two, however provisional.
Eloquent doubt that touches none of the actual numbers is the commonest way this goes through the motions. Require every criticism to name the figure or assumption it attacks.
Possible, but it should be remarked on. Silently arriving back where you started usually means the critique was decorative.
It is not calibrated and it never has been. Use it to rank what to check; do not treat "high confidence" as evidence of anything.
The most actionable sentence in the whole output. Without it, stage five is a feeling; with it, stage five is a task.
Five stages of introspection over a factual question is expensive theatre. Reserve it for work where being confidently wrong would cost something.

What is metacognitive prompting?
A five-stage technique that has a model understand the input, form a preliminary judgement, critically evaluate that judgement, reach a final decision, and then assess its own confidence in the result.
Where does it come from?
"Metacognitive Prompting Improves Understanding in Large Language Models" (Wang and Zhao, NAACL 2024), tested across four models and ten natural-language-understanding datasets and compared against chain of thought.
Is this the same as the Model Context Protocol?

How is it different from chain of thought?
Chain of thought breaks down the problem. Metacognitive prompting breaks down the reviewer — first impression, critique of that impression, considered position, stated confidence. One reasons about the task, the other reasons about the answer.
Can I trust the confidence stage?
As a relative signal within a single output, it is useful — it points at what to check first. As a probability it means nothing; model confidence is not calibrated against outcomes.
Why does my stage three feel empty?
Almost always because stage two hedged. A preliminary judgement with no position in it cannot be attacked. Insist on a real verdict in two or three sentences, then let stage three take it apart.
